Weldon town board members opted to go with a health insurance plan Mayor Julia Meacham said should save the town $81,804 over the current policy.

Commissioners at a special meeting today voted, with Martha Alford and Earl Smith absent, to use Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

While the individual deductible of $500 is higher than the current policy, Administrator Phyllis Lee told the board some of the drug copays are less and the overall costs are low enough that employees can possibly look at adding family members.

“This is one area for us being good stewards of the taxpayer’s money,” Meacham said. “I think the board has done an excellent job.”

The plan does not include dental but a dental plan can be included for less than the current plan, Lee said.
