Another Roanoke Valley student has been awarded the Ethel Crawley Scholarship.

Christian Thompson will receive a free undergraduate education to the college of his choice.

Assistant Superintendent Larry Catalano surprised the Roanoke Rapids High School senior with the scholarship letter this morning. Thompson was surrounded by his family during the announcement.

Thompson, who has worked a full-time job while attending high school, plans to attend East Carolina University and major in nursing.

“This is really a miracle,” he said. “I didn’t think they were going to award an additional scholarship this year.  Everyone who applied was so deserving. I’m really grateful for this and want to use it to eventually help others by becoming a nurse.”

The Ethel W. Crawley Memorial Education Fund Scholarship directs a scholarship selection committee to award a full four-year scholarship that will cover tuition, room, board, school fees, and books.

In addition to the scholarship, the recipients will receive additional money to purchase a computer.

RRHS Senior Emli Edwards was awarded in April as was Weldon senior Kayrisma Harrison.
