The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is coordinating a search and rescue operation at Roanoke Rapids Lake after a kayak mishap Thursday night.
Sheriff Tyree Davis said a single-person kayak carrying two people tipped over around 10 p.m.
One person made it to shore while another did not.
Davis said it is believed alcohol use was involved.
The Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Halifax County EMS, Gaston Fire and Rescue, and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission are assisting.
Davis said the Roanoke Rapids Police Department initially responded to the call Thursday night and handed it over to the sheriff's office since the Fifth Street Boat Landing is in the county.
