The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction has announced North Carolina is the first state to develop a dashboard to track progress made toward objectives, strategies, and metrics established in its Reentry 2030 Strategic Plan.
North Carolina’s plan was released in August 2024 by the state’s Joint Reentry Council.
“North Carolina is leading the way in how we provide reentry services,” said NCDAC Secretary Leslie Cooley Dismukes. “I am proud of the work our staff is doing to meet the needs of our incarcerated people and look forward to this dashboard being a helpful resource to North Carolinians.”
The online dashboard was developed by the NC Department of Adult Correction Innovation Section and unveiled at the Sept. 11 Joint Reentry Council meeting in Raleigh.
It’s the first state reentry dashboard that’s comprehensive, live, interactive, and provides goal-oriented data, the department said.
“I was excited to be a part of the launch of the dashboard at our recent Joint Reentry Council meeting,” said North Carolina First Lady Anna Stein, who is a member. “Providing incarcerated people with the tools and resources to succeed after reentry is crucial, whether through job readiness or mental health services. This dashboard is a valuable resource to ensure we stay on track for Reentry 2030.”
The dashboard allows one to review the status of the four goals, 26 objectives, numerous strategies and performance metrics for each objective. There are also a series of testimonials from formerly incarcerated individuals who have found success through the state’s rehabilitation and reentry efforts while they were still housed in state prisons.
Each of the goals and objectives has graphics that show the progress toward competition. If an objective has not started, that is also indicated.
“I am very impressed by the work done to create this Reentry 2030 dashboard,” said NCDAC Senior Deputy Secretary for Rehabilitation and Reentry George Pettigrew. “The public can keep track of the hard work our staff and other state organizations are doing to improve the lives of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people. The work our staff has done up to this point has been remarkable and I am confident we will reach our goals and objectives by 2030.”
Reentry 2030 is a national initiative led by The Council of State Governments to achieve better and more equitable reentry and reintegration by engaging states to adopt public, ambitious goals that drive system change.
North Carolina was one of the first states to join the initiative with former Governor Roy Cooper’s Executive Order 303 in January 2024, which directed a whole-of-government effort to improve reentry for formerly incarcerated people in the most significant effort targeted at strengthening reentry in state history.
Reentry 2030 aims to improve rehabilitation and reentry services for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people in North Carolina through specific directives developed in partnership with each cabinet agency, the Office of State Human Resources and the Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission.
