The maximum heat index for Roanoke Rapids is expected to reach 100 by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

On Monday and Tuesday it is expected to reach 107, followed by 106 on Wednesday and 103 on Thursday.

This will be the first significant heat wave of the season and particular concern exists across central North Carolina where the heat will be more persistent and numerous record highs and warm lows are likely.

Light winds, sunny days, and lack of overnight cooling will significantly increase the danger.

“This level of heat can be dangerous to anyone without effective cooling or adequate hydration, especially those engaging in lengthy outdoor activities,” the NWS said.

The NWS advises drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing, and canceling outdoor activities. Stay in an air-conditioned place including overnight. Check on neighbors and provide ample water and shade for pets.
