A man already on the state sex offender registry was charged Wednesday with first-degree statutory sex offense following a report the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office received from the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office on Monday about a child abuse case they were investigating.
Major Anzell Harris said the information led to the discovery of a crime that occurred on Harris Street in Roanoke Rapids and involved Robert Lee McManus.
Detective T. Byers arrested McManus, 36, at the sheriff’s office. He is being held without the opportunity for bond and has an April 24 district court date.
McManus was convicted of second-degree sex offense and indecent liberties with a minor in Halifax County on April 23, 2007 when he was 16.
The offense date was July 1, 2004 and the victim’s age was listed as 2, according to the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry.
He is registered as an aggravated offender and his minimum registration period is lifetime.
He was registered in October of 2009.
