A Roanoke Rapids woman on a year's term of supervised release for a September 2024 uttering conviction was arrested and charged on drug and gun counts Wednesday.

Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s House said Leanne Hayes, 40, was stopped after Community Action Team Sergeant G. Martin observed a motor vehicle violation in the area of Highway 158 near Airport Road.

After Hayes exited the vehicle a container containing a glass smoking device and other drug paraphernalia was seized.

During the stop, Martin observed Hayes moving around and heard something hit the ground. He also noticed a handgun under his patrol vehicle’s tire.

A folded dollar bill was on the ground on the passenger side of the vehicle containing a white powdery substance. The substance was identified as cocaine.

Hayes was arrested and transported to the sheriff’s office where she was searched by Lieutenant T. Arrington of the detention center.

Arrington located approximately 4.6 grams of fentanyl.

The firearm had been reported stolen from the Roanoke Rapids area in September 2024.

Hayes was charged with possession of firearm by felon, felony possession of cocaine, destroying criminal evidence, possession of stolen firearm, possession of schedule II controlled substance, possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule II controlled substance, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to wear a seat belt.

Hayes is scheduled for a district court appearance on Friday on the cocaine and firearm charges.

She was jailed without the opportunity for bond on the felon in possession of a firearm and possession of cocaine counts, according to detention center records. She received two $5,000 U.S. currency only bonds for the two felony probation violation counts for which she is scheduled for a March 17 superior court date, according to detention center records.
