Wrenn's view - Opinion

Will there still be baseball or Softball in Roanoke Rapids, that's the question I have been hearing for several weeks.Let me fill you in on what I have learned in asking a few questions to both the Roanoke Valley Youth Fellowship president (Baseball) Carey Foster and Roanoke Valley Girls Softball League president (Softball) Mike Lucas and also Patti Naggy former Eastern North Carolina Babe Ruth Softball State Commissioner.

Both the Roanoke Rapids area baseball and Softball leagues have chartered with Babe Ruth as far as I know for at least during my past thirteen years in the Valley and have been under the Eastern North Carolina (ENC).

Babe Ruth headquarters in NJ has decided it did not want North Carolina broken into two regions a Eastern and Western North Carolina region. It just wants one North Carolina, so the ENC has been dissolved and has only one State Commissioner for baseball and one for Softball in charge of the whole state.

Most of the former ENC assistant commissioners in baseball and softball have resigned from their Babe Ruth duties. All of the districts president as well as the Roanoke Rapids area are weighing their options for the 2014 season. There is a meeting scheduled for league presidents and members of the former ENC baseball and softball to meet with the Little League officials on November 10th at
South Central High School, located at 570 Forlines Road, Winterville, NC at 2 pm.

Both Valley presidents said we will be playing ball in Roanoke Rapids, just under what if any charter has not been decided.

Another question that I asked Carey Foster concerning the baseball program was that a rumor was going around that the Roanoke Rapids Parks & Recreation would run the baseball program next year. Mr. Foster stated, "As President of the Roanoke Valley Youth Fellowship that runs the baseball program have not asked the City to take over the program."

The Roanoke Rapids Girls Softball League will be holding their yearly General membership meeting Wednesday night November 13 at 6:30 pm at the T.J. Davis Recreation Center. Five positions on the board are up for election. All parents that had a daughter participate in the league are eligible to vote. The board will also select a League President at this meeting. The meeting is open to the public.
