Polls open at 6:30 Tuesday morning and will close that evening at 7:30 across Halifax County.

At issue are contested races for the sheriff's seat, county commissioners and Weldon City Schools Board of Education.

A total of five Democrats will run against two Republicans in the Halifax County Board of Commissioners race.

The field widened earlier this year as James Mills, of Scotland Neck, and Michael Hawkins, of the Littleton area, presented petitions to the county Board of Elections office to run as write-in candidates.

Their names will not appear on the ballot but there will be two write-in spots for supporters to enter their names.

Two Republicans, John Whichard and Sammy Webb, will also be challenging May Democratic primary winners Vernon Bryant. Rives Manning and Patrick Qualls.

Meanwhile, Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp, who won the Democratic primary in May, will face opposition from Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon, who chose to forego the primary and run as an independent and Republican James Warren, a retired high-ranking officer with the sheriff's office.

There will be a contested race for the Weldon City Schools of Board of Education as three challengers vie for the incumbent seats of Tanya Byrd-Robinson, Pattie Cotton, Timothy Green and Edith Jenkins.

Those challengers are Chester Alston Jr., Tiffany Hale, and James “Tank” Williams.
