As two more people were taken into custody Thursday in last week's shooting death of Wilton Lee Shawn Cotton, Roanoke Rapids police say none of the five arrested thus far have admitted to gang ties.

“I can tell you, everything surrounding this has something to do with drugs,” Roanoke Rapids police Detective Bobby Martin said. “Nobody has admitted to any gang activity. Drugs are ultimately the root of crimes we see committed in Halifax County.”

Clark leads Alston in for booking.

Martin confirmed that the pair taken into custody Thursday — Cequan Alston and Charquon Boone, both 17 and from Roanoke Rapids — are brothers and were whisked away by Halifax County Sheriff's Office detectives from Northwest Halifax High School.

Detective Joseph Sealey of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office escorts Boone.

Both teens were booked on one count of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts felony conspiracy, one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

The assault with a deadly weapon count reflects the alleged shooting of a still unnamed man who was sitting in a car with Cotton the rainy afternoon of September 24 at Gordon Drive near the intersection of Oak Street.

Martin said he is familiar with The Fam from his previous work in the county. The Fam has been a frequent hash tag used in comments on the story in rrspin.com.

Meanwhile, Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Andy Jackson said, “The detective division is investigating all aspects of this murder including possible gang ties.”

The surviving victim, Jackson said, is now in stable condition.

To date, five teenagers have now been charged in the murder and investigation continues. The three previous people charged are Tyshon Alston; Rodney Joyner; and Ketrell Hawkins.

Of the four rrspin.com has witnessed being taken into custody, none has offered any comment.

They have all been jailed without the opportunity for bond.
