A man struck by a tractor-trailer this morning on Highway 158 at the Virginia Avenue intersection is listed in serious condition and is unresponsive, according to Roanoke Rapids police.

Lieutenant C.E. Burnette said Scott J. McCorkell, who lists a California address but was living on Carolina Rest Home Road, was attempting to cross the street when he was struck by an eastbound tractor-trailer shortly after 8:30 a.m.

Burnette said the truck driver applied brakes hard and drifted to the center lane in an attempt to keep from hitting the 37-year-old victim.

McCorkell was flown to Vidant in Greenville.

The driver will not be charged or cited.
