A man straddling a bicycle in the travel lane of Highway 903 in the Scotland Neck area Friday night was struck and killed, according to the state Highway Patrol.

An initial report by Trooper Justin Murray indicates Thurman Lee Battle of Scotland Neck was in the eastbound travel lane around 9 p.m. when he was struck. The driver tried to avoid hitting the victim, who died at the scene.

The driver will not be charged.

Meanwhile, this morning, Roanoke Rapids police are investigating a crash involving a pedestrian and tractor-trailer at the intersection of Highway 158 and Virginia Avenue near the Chaloner Middle School crossing lane.

Full details were not immediately available.

The driver of the rig, who declined to give his name, said he tried to stop. “I wish people had more respect for trucks. You never want anything like this to happen.”

The state Highway Patrol assisted police in the investigation.
