A Scotland Neck man is being booked for murder after allegedly stabbing another man to death this evening.

Town Police Chief Joe Williams said William Whitaker Jr., 49, surrendered to the police department around 6:30 this evening.

He is expected to be taken to the Halifax County Detention Center where he will most likely be held without the opportunity for bond pending an appearance before a judge.

Scotland Neck police received a call around 4:45 this afternoon that a man was unconscious, unresponsive and bleeding at the EP Mart on Ninth and Main Street.

The victim's name is currently being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

He was transported to the emergency room of Our Community Hospital in Scotland Neck and was scheduled to be airlifted out, but was pronounced dead before the helicopter could fly him out.

Williams said the victim was stabbed multiple times with a knife and it appears the motive was linked to a dispute over a girlfriend. Whitaker and the victim had apparently gotten into a conversation which became heated.
