Northampton County Sheriff Jack Smith said he was pleased by results Tuesday night that catapulted him from appointed sheriff to the top law enforcement officer in the county.

“I'm excited. I want to thank my staff and want to thank the poll workers and my team,” he said early this morning. “I thank the citizens of Northampton for believing in me. I promise I won't let them down.”

Smith, who ran against former county investigator Brenda Burnette, said, “I just want to say the campaign was clean. There was no dirt thrown. I think everything went well. I'm going to serve the citizens to the best of my ability. We are going to look at operations to better serve the citizens.”

The sheriff said it is his intention to utilize dollars wisely. “I want to make sure our courthouse is safe and I have plans to put deputies where crime is high. I'm going to try to get an increase in manpower and work on old cases, some of the cold cases, to keep those on the forefront.”

Smith said he doesn't foresee drastic changes. “I think I've got a very good team. I'm happy with what everyone is doing. As long as they do their job they will have a job.”
