A Roanoke Rapids man faces charges of criminal damage to property and trespassing after driving his Jeep on the Roanoke Canal Trail Saturday afternoon.

Captain O.L. Morgan of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said the city's parks and recreation department reported between $6,000 to $10,000 in damages to the trail in the form of ruts.

Noel Christopher Jenkins, 26, reportedly told police he was driving his Jeep on the trail when it slipped off, and almost rolled over. He was driving the vehicle on the trail near Carolina Street.

The vehicle remains stuck. Jenkins was not injured.

Cases like this, Morgan said, are why vehicles other than bicycles are forbidden on the Canal Trail. “It's designed for people to walk on because you can slide off and go down deep ravines and get hurt or killed.”
