MLK Day events set in Halifax, Northampton

Martin Luther King Jr. Day events will be held in Halifax and Northampton counties.

Sunday wreath laying

Commemorations in Halifax County begin Sunday at 3 p.m. with the annual wreath laying ceremony at MLK Community Park on Virginia Avenue and Wyche Street in Roanoke Rapids.
The event is sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Southern Christian Leadership Conference where a clergy processional will be held. Seating will be provided and refreshments will be served afterward.

Monday events

On Monday several events will be held in Halifax County including the annual parade in Littleton.
The parade, sponsored by Oak Grove and Piney Grove Baptist churches, begins at 10 a.m. on Main Street.
Lineup is at 9 a.m. near the post office on Mosby Avenue.

At 11:30 a.m., The 17th Annual Halifax Countywide Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration will be held at the Tillery Community Center, 321 Community Center Road, in Tillery beginning with a “Dutch Brunch” from 11:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.
The program will begin at 12:15 p.m.
The theme of this year’s event is “Let’s Talk About The Issues: The State of Our State, County and Education.”
Senator Angela Bryant, 4th District NC, Halifax County Commissioner Marcelle O. Smith are both confirmed.

Monday events at Oak Grove

Throughout the day Monday at Oak Grove Baptist Church on Highway 158 near Littleton, the church will be collecting new blankets and throws to benefit the elderly and families. Representatives from DSS will be on hand from 10:30 a.m. to noon to assist.
At noon the annual MLK Celebration Program at the church will commence in the Promiseland Sanctuary.
At 1:45 p.m. there will be a food distribution by the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in the church’s fellowship hall.

Northampton County

The annual MLK March in Jackson begins Monday at 9 a.m. at the DOT building on Highway 305. Participants will march to the Wellness Center nearby.
The annual MLK program will begin at 10 a.m.
