A Wednesday night shooting in the 900 block of Henry Street has now turned into a homicide investigation.

Roanoke Rapids police Chuck Hasty said the victim in the shooting, a 34-year-old man, died during surgery Thursday morning at an undisclosed medical facility.
Both Hasty and Captain Bobby Martin confirmed the shooting was the cause of his death. The police department is not yet releasing the victim’s name.
Hasty said in a statement the only suspect description thus far in the case centers on three men seen running from the area north toward Eighth Street.
“These subjects are encouraged to come forward and speak with law enforcement, they may have witnessed something,” Hasty said.
Hasty and Martin both immediately declined to discuss motive in the case.
The shooting occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Officers responded and found the victim, who Martin confirmed at the scene was wheelchair-bound, lying on the ground between two houses.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds from what Martin said that evening is believed to be a handgun.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Lieutenant Charles Vaught at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
