Businesses, organizations and churches are stepping up to help the Roanoke Rapids Police Department put on a back to school cookout Thursday afternoon.

The event will be held at the Neighborhood Resource Center on Jackson Street between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., Chief Chuck Hasty said.
“We want to bring the community together,” Hasty said. “We’re having hot dogs and a few games.”
The police department will also be handing out coloring books which have a safety theme as well as other educational materials.
There will be a dunking booth which the chief has volunteered to be a target as well as anyone else who wishes to volunteer for the duty, he said.
Bounce and Bounce will provide an inflatable house and the dunking booth, he said.
He said he is pleased with the help from local businesses and churches which include Signature Dogs, the Men’s Prayer Breakfast, Food Lion downtown, Discount Tire, George Collins, who is the Little Debbie distributor, W.C. Jones and McPherson Beverages. Church sponsors include St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and Calvary and Victory Baptist churches.
“We all need better relationships,” Hasty said. “It’s not just about us, but about us joining together as human beings.”
