Roanoke Rapids police Chief Chuck Hasty said it was not immediately clear what started an argument in the 1800 block of Powell Street, in which the victim was stabbed and assaulted.
Several officers responded to the call around 11:15 p.m.
The victim, who was transported to Halifax Regional Medical Center, refused treatment at the hospital, Hasty said.
In a statement, Hasty said the victim told officers Grady Lamonte Jefferson, 30, of Roanoke Rapids, had stabbed him during an argument and Meisha Sparkle Malone also assaulted him during the argument.
Jefferson fled the scene and Malone was located a couple of residences down.
She was arrested and charged by Officer Dustin Newsome with assault and served two outstanding orders for arrest.
She received a $6,500 bond and August 5 court date.
Jefferson is wanted for assault and assault with a deadly weapon and is encouraged to surrender to law enforcement and take care of the matter, Hasty said in the statement.
Anyone with information on the location of Jefferson is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
Hasty said the relationship between Jefferson and Malone was not clear.
Lieutenant Jeff Baggett and Master Officer Adam Salmon assisted.
