The arrest Thursday of an Enfield funeral director wanted for reportedly bilking a widow out of insurance money may just be the beginning.

“After the initial report hit several other people contacted Detective (Willie) Murphy (Jr.) saying they've been victims of fraud,” Enfield police Chief Tyree Davis said this evening.

Enfield police arrested Earl Schirra Joyner-Clark, 53, of Rocky Mount, shortly after noon, Davis said in a statement.

The police department received a Crimestoppers tip the funeral director was in Edgecombe County court on unrelated counts, which state court records show were traffic offenses.

He was detained by Rocky Mount police and was later turned over to Murphy. Joyner-Clark was jailed on $30,000 bond and has a July 20 court where he will answer to charges of uttering a forged endorsement; obtaining property by false pretense; and identity theft.

The funeral director's arrest was the result of an investigation which determined he allegedly pocketed $8,000 from the second insurance policy of a widow after the first policy satisfied the burial arrangements of her late husband.

Davis said in the statement the police department has opened other cases on Joyner-Clark involving other people allegedly defrauded by him.

Davis said he encourages anyone who believes they were victimized by Joyner-Clark to call the police department at 252-445-5122 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
