Durham man charged with statutory rape

A Durham man is in jail on $1 million bond after allegedly having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old Halifax County girl he met on social networking sites.

An illegal cigarette trafficking case that included the indictment of a Roanoke Rapids who died awaiting sentencing was resolved today with the transfer of more than $3 million in uncollected tax revenue to the state Department of Revenue.

Randy Lee Taylor

Randy Lee Taylor, age 58 of Robin Road passed away July 12, 2013 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Randy was born January 8, 1955 in Halifax County North Carolina, the son of the late Jacob Rudolph Taylor and Nettie Virginia Gilliam. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. Randy will be truly missed by so many. He was also the owner operator of Interstate Garage in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Monday fire contained to kitchen

A kitchen fire at 915 Glover Street Monday night was contained to the cooking area, the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department reported.

A 2-foot alligator found June 29 in the Roanoke River around the historic site in Halifax was relocated to an isolated, yet undisclosed part of the river, and should pose no threat.

RV U15 were sent to Loser bracket in game one of District 7 All-star tournment last Wednesday by Perquimans. Because two teams droped out and the brackets were not redone before tournament play, Roanoke Valley had to work its way back through  to the championship games, by beating the remaining five teams to get another chance at Perquimans. The Championship game is Tuesday night in Hertford at 5 p.m.

Nine N&O racks stolen in Weldon

The Weldon Police Department is investigating the theft of nine News and Observer newspaper racks that have occurred within the last few weeks.

Roanoke Rapids and Weldon police are joining forces to present the annual National Night Out with a theme of “Protecting Our Youth Through Education.”

Roanoke Rapids Hornet's will be taking sign-ups for the 2013 season at Ledgerwood field on 11th street today Monday July 15th at 5:30 pm.
