The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports pertaining to an unidentified caller advising residents they have won Publishers Clearing House prizes.

No one has been taken by the scam, Sheriff Wes Tripp said Friday evening.
The calls are being made from an 876 area code which is designated for Jamaica.
“The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office would once again caution citizens when dealing with unknown numbers,” Tripp said in a statement. “Also use caution when an unknown, unconfirmed person advises you that you have won a large sum of money but to receive it you must first pay taxes, attorney’s fees, or other fees on said money.”
Tripp said recipients of these calls should protect themselves from fraud by confirming who they are speaking with, doing an Internet search on the phone number, or contacting local law enforcement to confirm or deny fraudulent contacts.
“Always remember in these situations if it is too good to be true it usually is, and never give money, bank account information, social security numbers or other personal information to anyone you have not confirmed,” the sheriff said.
