The Roanoke Rapids High School Varsity Baseball team picked up a big road win Wednesday afternoon at Bertie High by a score of 9-3 in 8 innings.

This marked the third straight game in which the Yellow Jackets won in their final at-bat.

The Jackets got the scoring started with two runs in the first inning.  AJ Strickland doubled home Caleb Elias.  Bennett Liverman then singled to score Jon Conner who was running for the pitcher Strickland.

Bertie responded with single runs in the 1st and 3rd innings to tie the game.  Roanoke Rapids took a 3-2 lead in the 5th inning when Caleb Elias hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Josh Miller who had doubled earlier in the inning.

Bertie got a single run in the 6th inning to tie the game at 3.

The score would stay that way through 7 innings, so the teams headed to extras.

In the 8th inning the Yellow Jackets exploded for 6 runs to break open the game.  Big hits in the inning were a double by Colin Long, a 2 RBI double from Wade Jenkins and an RBI single by Caleb Elias.  The Yellow Jackets would hold Bertie scoreless in the 8th inning to preserve the 9-3 victory.

AJ Strickland started on the mound and picked up the win for the Yellow Jackets.  Strickland pitched 7 innings and struck out 7 batters.  Bennett Liverman would pitch a 1-2-3 8th inning to pick up the save.

Jackets Head Coach Mark Snead stated, "This was our most complete game of the year.  We had strong pitching that was backed up by solid defense.  We also took a better approach at the plate and were much more focused on offense.  I am really proud of how our guys took what we worked on in practice yesterday and put it to use in the game."

With the win RRHS improves to 4-0 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets will start conference play next week when they host Granville Central on Tuesday afternoon.  Game time will be 6pm.
