Jackets baseball opens season with a Win

The Roanoke Rapids High School Yellow Jackets Varsity Baseball team opened up their 2020 season with a 6-3 win over Bertie on Monday night at Doyle field.

Bertie took an early 2-0 lead before Roanoke Rapids got on the board when AJ Strickland hit a long solo homerun to right field in the bottom of the third inning

Bertie responded with a run in the 4th inning to take a 3-1 lead. The RRHS bats finally woke up in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring 5 runs. Jacob Deberry doubled to score Logan Johnson. Josh Coker then hit a go-ahead two RBI double to score Trevor Harrison and Deberry. Ethan Vincent then drove home Coker and Colin Long finished off the scoring by driving in Wade Jenkins.

Bennett Liverman started on the mound for the Yellow Jackets. He pitched into the 4th inning giving up 3 unearned runs while striking out 6 batters. AJ Strickland picked up the win in relief allowing 0 runs while striking out 8 batters.

Jackets Head Coach Mark Snead stated, "This was a good team win for us to open the season. We started off slow, which is to be expected with not being able to get in a scrimmage game. Our pitchers pitched well and kept us in the game. Our defense got better as the game went along, and we made some adjustments at the plate and had better at bats each time through the order. I like how we played together as a team tonight."

RRHS is 1-0 on the season and will next play Rocky Mount at home on Wednesday at 5pm.
