James Hinton Qualls was born on March 4, 1936, and was the son of the late Ethel Harris and Tracy C. Qualls. 

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lufaye V. Qualls, son, James H. Qualls Jr., and step sons, Joseph F. Royster, and Timothy R. Royster, four grandchildren, Ian Qualls, Kenzie Ramirez, Seth Royster, Lauren Mulloy, plus five great grandchildren, and soon to be two more.

James graduated from Atlantic Christian College and served in the N.C. Department of Justice as a magistrate in Halifax County, retiring in 1991. 

He was also a part time employee of the U.S. Postal Service. James was an active member of Harris Chapel Baptist Church, and served as a deacon, chairman of the board of Deacons, and was also a Sunday school teacher for many years. 

A visitation will be held at Faith Tabernacle on Monday, October 28, 2024 starting at 1:00 pm, a funeral service will immediately follow starting at 2:00 pm with Pastor Roy Porter, the Rev. Kevin Qualls and Ed West officiating. Interment will follow at Faith Tabernacle Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the endowment fund in his name at Faith Tabernacle, Hollister. N.C.
