Jonathan Whitfield Copeland, Sr., 90, of Gaston, NC, died Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at Carolina Rest Home, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mr. Copeland was born in Northampton County, NC, the Son of the Late Lenly Murrell Copeland and Hattie Bryant Copeland and a retired Carpenter and a U.S. Army Veteran. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Frances Birdsong Copeland, two sisters, Lucille Brewer and Ruby Mae Copeland, four brothers, Gaspard, Milton, Shirley and L. Jay Copeland, a grandson, Matthew Whitfield Keeter and a great grandson, River Keeter.

Words cannot begin to convey the love his family felt for him. All children and animals were drawn to him and he was known as our “True Southern Gentleman” to all who knew him. In addition to his love of family, he instilled his love of fishing, hunting, gardening and good gospel harmony. Above all “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Surviving are: three daughters, Debbie Griffies and her husband Bryan of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Brenda Cooke and her husband Allen, of Gaston, NC, Jackie Liles and her husband Neal of Aurelian Springs, NC; a son Jonathan “Joey” Whitfield Copeland, Jr. and his wife Amy of Aurelian Springs, NC; six grandchildren, Michael Keeter, Jr., Nikki Griffies, Kasey Taylor, Kaley Copeland, Briar Copeland, Brynley Copeland; seven great grandchildren, Kingston Keeter, Noland Keeter, Oliver Keeter, Ayden Taylor, Zoey Taylor, Hayley Taylor and Drake Carlisle.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at 2:00PM, at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Gaston, NC, with Rev. Richard C. Russell, officiating. Interment will follow, with Military Honors, in the Church Cemetery. The Family will receive at the church for one hour prior to the service.
