On behalf of Choanoke Area Development Association of NC, Inc., (CADA), Board of Directors and Staff, with profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved former Executive Director & Executive Director Emeritus, Mrs. Sallie P. Surface. 

She passed on Wednesday morning, April 2nd, 2025.

Since1983, Mrs. Surface has been assisting families in the Roanoke-Chowan area with CADA. She served as the Executive director for 31 Years. Through her work and leadership, thousands of low-income families have received assistance such as home repair and home rehabilitation, weatherization, rental assistance, workforce development, pre-school education, home-buyer education, and community action programs.

A memorial service for Mrs. Surface will be held at Chowan University, Saturday, April 12th, at 2:00 pm. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Dan Surface Memorial Scholarship fund at Chowan University.

This has been a heavy blow to the CADA family, Roanoke Chowan area, community action family, and the state. 

Mrs. Sallie P. Surface and the “work” will forever be ingrained in our hearts and minds.
