On July 20, 2023, the world lost and heaven gained a beloved mother, Marilu Santiago Jacome, (Lulu) at the age of 50.

She was a wife, mother, sister, daughter, and grandmother who always had a smile on her face no matter the challenges life brought to her.

She migrated to the United states at the age of 17 from Veracruz, Mexico her birth place. She and her Husband Gilberto worked hard to have a new beginning. She made North Carolina her home.

She was a caring, loving, and giving person. She passed away from complications related to her Chronic Kidney Disease. Though Marilu’s health was failing for years, few people knew the extent to which she struggled. Her joy for life and indomitable spirit kept her pushing through the pain. But throughout the health challenges she never gave up. She showed us how much of a fighter she was with her strong desire to live life until the very end. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. Just because she is no longer physically here, it doesn’t mean she lost her fight because she never stopped fighting. She actually won her fight and now walks in the golden streets of heaven with Dulce Estrella Pineda Matias (Sweet star), her 9 month old granddaughter.

She was surrounded by loved ones days and weeks before her passing. She knew she was loved and at peace.

Marilu is survived by her husband Gilberto Matias Lopez; her four children Edward Matias Santiago, Gilberto Matias Santiago, Alexis Matias Santiago, and Christopher Matias Santiago; her daughter-n-law Maria Delamora; her son-n-law Joaquin Pineda; her grandchildren Jonathan Perez Matias, Anthony Perez Matias, Rosalena Matias, Mia Matias, Ethan Matias, Gabriella Matias, Elizabeth Matias, Nycere Matias; her parents Josephine Jacome Gonzales and Roman Santiago; her brothers and sisters Manuel Santiago, Ariana Santiago, Priscila Santiago, and Roman Santiago; and her 17 nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2022 at 11:00am in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:00- 11:00 am at the funeral home prior to the service.
