Joseph Elmer "Joe" Floyd, age 81, passed away on August 13, 2022, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with his children and Joyce's children by his side.

He was born on November 9, 1940, in Bertie County, N.C., to Robert "Woody" and Emily B. Floyd.

Joe was the youngest of six boys who loved fishing, playing music, and getting into mischief together. From an early age through adulthood, you could count on great music and laughter when the Floyd boys got together, each playing at least one musical instrument.

Joe spent most of his adult years with his first love, Gail Courtney, in Scotland Neck, NC, where they raised their daughters. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and the Scotland Neck V.F.W. When he wasn't fishing, cooking or vacationing with his family, he could be found managing The Triangle service station and convenience store, enjoying his skills on the pool table, or being mischievous with his friends. He was often described as "a character," being well-known for his sense of humor, outstanding singing voice, family recipes, and outlandish Halloweens.

Joe sold The Triangle to join Beasley's Lumber Company prior to going to work at Caledonia Correctional Facility. After retiring from Caledonia, he split his time between Ocean Isle Beach, NC, and the Roanoke River near Weldon, NC, with his love, Joyce.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. "Woody" Floyd, his mother, Emily Bazemore Floyd, his sister, Mary Elizabeth, his brothers, Hillary, Herbert Cola, Paul, Robert and William Floyd, and his life partner, Joyce K. Bryant.

Joe is survived by his daughters Gina Floyd Lovegrove and husband Lee of Nashville, NC, and Cynthia Floyd of Nashville, NC, grandsons Joseph Lovegrove of Emporia, VA, and Matthew Lovegrove of Nashville, NC, and Joyce's children Debbie Bryant Wheeler (Eddie) of Winterville, NC, and Rip Bryant of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 - 1:15 PM, Thursday, August 18th, 2022, at Hockaday Funeral Home, 507 US-158, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery, 225 Kemp Avenue, Roanoke Rapids, NC. Extra chairs will be available for those with physical challenges.
