Fred Gatewood Ward, Jr., 89, of Roanoke Rapids, NC was called home by his Heavenly Father August 9th, 2022.

Fred was born December 31st, 1932 in Middlesex County, VA to the late Fred G. Ward, Sr. and Grace Carlton Ward.

He was a proud veteran, having served in the United States Navy during the Korean War stationed in Kwajalein Island and the National Guard prior to the Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 70 years, Frances Bryant Ward, his daughter, Deborah W. Le, son Alfred Scott Ward and eight siblings.

Left to cherish his memories are his son Steven Lee Ward and his significant other Doris Reid. Grandchildren Steven Ward, Jenifer Capps, Carrie Bost, Stephanie Lynch, Amanda Isbell, Will Ward and great grandchildren who were truly blessed to have him as their “PopPop” as well as a host of nephews, nieces and friends who dearly loved him.

He leaves a grieving yet grateful family.  He and his wife Frances were truly a blessing to their entire family. We were honored to witness and will always cherish the memories of the love they shared for each other as it was a one of a kind true love.

Fred enjoyed watching the Baltimore Orioles play, old westerns, singing, a rocking chair, a good joke and spending time with his family. He was always laughing and was a joy to be around. He was a member of Smith United Methodist Church while he lived in Roanoke Rapids where he was part of the church choir.

Friends may visit with the family on Friday afternoon, August 12th at 2:00pm at Smith United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm in the church sanctuary with Pastor Stan Lewis presiding. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

The family suggests contributions to Smith United Methodist Church, 1215 Smith Church Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 for those wishing to give in Fred’s memory.
