Virginia Cousins Barber   (1943-2021)

Virginia Cousins Barber of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina passed away peacefully on April 3rd, 2021 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family.  

She was 77 years old. 

Mrs. Barber, also known to many as Aunt Jenny, Grandma Barber and Nana, was born on July 28th, 1943 in Richmond, Virginia to Etheridge Lee Cousins and Alma Virginia Bailey. 

She married Tilghmon Wayne Barber Senior on January 5th, 1962 and remained married for a total of 59 glorious years.  

She graduated from Bainbridge High School in Richmond, Va.  

Her early College education was carried out in Richmond, Virginia as well where she obtained Technical Certification in both Business and Healthcare. 

Virginia worked as an inspector at JP Stevens for many years before changing professions entirely and venturing out on her own.  

She was a successful entrepreneur and businesswomen.  

Mrs. Barber was not only the owner of ABC Busy Bee’s but she also operated and directed the childcare center as well. 

She loved children and they loved her. She touched the lives of so many. Inspiring, educating and watching them grow.  

She stayed in close contact with several of the families who obtained her services throughout the years.  

It was not just a business but more of a second home.  

She was the best daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, nana, caregiver, and friend that anyone could ever ask for. She had a contagious smile, a big heart and made everyone feel at ease in her presence. She enjoyed her time spent in the kitchen cooking delicious meals for her loved ones and hosting family gatherings or events for special occasions such as all of the major holidays, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries etc. 

She loved to decorate especially for Christmas and made every holiday one to remember. She loved to give and to see the expressions on the faces of those she loved while they unwrapped each gift. This brought her joy and delight.  

She was an extraordinarily strong, brave, beautiful, thoughtful, considerate, caring, supportive woman and it showed through her many acts of kindness. 

She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends camping at Lake Gaston as well as her time spent at the beach. 

She was an active member of Maranatha Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. She will forever be kept in our hearts and never forgotten. 

Virginia is preceded in death by her loving parents Etheridge Lee Cousins and Alma Virginia Bailey, stepfather John Elmo Hawkins, sisters Lois Jean Spence and Etheridge Marie Cline, brother Johnathan Lee Hawkins and her daughters Cynthia Barber Collins and Sheila Barber Rose. 

Mrs. Barber is survived by her husband Tim, daughter Tina and her husband Kyle, son Timmy and his fiancé Denise, beloved close family friend Stefanie Crutchlow,  granddaughter Shannon and her husband Patrick, granddaughter Christina, granddaughter Sheila and  her Husband Billy, granddaughter Audrey and her fiancé Matt, granddaughter Crystal, grandson Justin, grandson Timmy,  granddaughter Sheila and great grandchildren Caleb, Karlie, Cameron, Brennan, Adam, Hailey and Tyler as well as numerous special nieces, nephews, and other family members plus close friends whose lives have all been touched by Mrs. Barber in one way or another.  

She also leaves behind a well-loved family pet, a Maltese named Bella. 

The wake will be held at Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina on April 6th, 2021 from 6pm- 8pm. A funeral service will be held on April 7th, 2021 at 1pm at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina after which the graveside will commence at Cedarwood Cemetery.  

Please join us as we pay our respect, honor a remarkable woman, reminisce, grieve, support one another, and celebrate the life of Virginia Lee Cousins Barber. 

The family wishes to send a special thank you to all Oncology, Hospice and Hospital staff for their care and compassion provided to Mrs. Barber in her time of need.
