Gene Edward Butts, Sr., 77, died September 29, 2018, at WakeMed Raleigh Hospital.

He was born July 10, 1941, in Halifax County, the son of Jack Moss Butts, Sr. and Anna Belle Cox Butts.  

Mr. Butts was a painter; he was an avid fisherman and loved to play music.

Survivors include his son, Flash Butts (Barbara); sisters, Barbara B. Gordon (Bill) and Geraldine B. Gregory; special niece and special nephew, Laura Raymond and Butch Barrow; nephews, Kenny and Tony Barrow, Tony and Bill Gordon, Jr; niece, Michelle Barrow; large extended family Jones, Cobb, Boan, McDonald, Wright, Holliday, Lewis, Odom, Carr.

Mr.Butts was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Brenda Jones Butts; sister, Hazel Butts Barrow; and brother, Jack Moss Butts, Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 pm Wednesday at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.

Pastor Randy Martin will conduct the funeral service at 11 am Thursday in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service; and interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
