Georgia “Peggy” Matthews Howell Beickert, 95 of Margarettsville, NC passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

She was born in Northampton County on March 14, 1928 to the late George Washington Matthews and Eva Isabell Johnson Matthews and was preceded in death by her first husband, Rufus Butler Howell, Jr., her second husband, Marty Beickert; her sons, James William Howell, Sr. and Marvin Howell, Sr.; her sisters, Rosa Matthews Marotto and Hettie Bell Rose and her brother, Rufus Matthews.

“Peggy” attended Severn Baptist Church; enjoyed going on a long walk down the pecan lined driveway to get her mail every day; sitting on the front porch and being sung and ministered to by her Mennonite friends and neighbors and enjoyed making pillow puff quilts. 

She also loved gardening with her husband and even sold some of the vegetables which they grew. 

“Peggy” was also skilled with the ability to help her husband, Rufus with houses which they would take down board by board and resell everything worthy of being reused and repurposed. Of the many things she enjoyed, “Peggy” loved to hold a baby and to be in their presence.

“Peggy” is survived by her daughter, Georgia Paullette Howell of Margarettsville; her sons, George Bennett Howell (Rema) of Margarettsville, Ricky Thomas Howell (Yvonne) of Seaboard, Joey Butler Howell of Margarettsville, Andy Ray Howell (Catherine) of Moyock; her daughter-in-law and very special caretaker, Virginia Howell of Margarettsville. She also leaves behind a lasting legacy of very many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, all of which she loved and cared for very much.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 24, 2023 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Mark Corbett officiating at the Howell Family Cemetery in Margarettsville, NC.

The family received friends on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at Askew Funeral Service– Jackson Chapel from 6:30 until 8:00 PM in Jackson.
