Shirley Josey, 91, passed away peacefully in her home on April 12, 2020.

Born on July 23, 1928 in Nash County, Rocky Mount, she was the daughter of the late Pearle Lurline Vaughan and Paul Washington Stewart.  

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Josey and her brothers, Allen Stewart and Paul W. Stewart.

Shirley graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School.  She also attended Richmond Professional Institute on a scholarship from Roanoke Rapids Lion Club.  

She worked at Roanoke Rapids Recreation Department as Women’s Director and taught physical education in local elementary schools.  

She also taught baton twirling and judged at many band competitions in eastern United States.  Shirley turned to golf and was quite a competitor in the sport.  

She won many club championships in North Carolina and South Carolina.

She is survived by her brother, Needham (Jackie) Jones, and her sister, Juanita (Richard) Merritt, and step-daughter, Suzanne Josey Prince, along with many nieces and nephews.
