Jonathan Stephen Ricks, 56, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2019.

Born in Halifax County, NC and was preceded death by his father, Garland Stephenson “Steve” Ricks and his beloved K-9, Texas.

“Jon” was the owner/operator of Rick’s Country Market in Weldon.

He was a butcher for 40 years and loved to please his customers. 

He self-taught himself how to play the guitar and Harmonica and loved fishing, hunting, and was an excellent marksman. 

He loved birds and was an avid reader. When he was growing up, he spent many weekends with his grandparents in Conway, NC. “John” had a unique way of reading someone’s inner feelings. His ultimate joy in his life was his grandchildren. He was also a member and deacon of Community Free-Will Baptist Church in Weldon. 

“Jon” is survived by his wife, Jane Thompson Ricks; his sons, Stephen Lawrence Ricks, and Daniel Keith Ricks of Roanoke Rapids; his mother, Jean Ricks Lucas and his stepfather, Bob Lucas of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his two grandsons, Walker Stephenson Ricks and Wilson Lawrence Ricks both of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his two sisters, Katherine R. Askew and her husband Doug of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Lisbeth R. Benjelloun and her husband, Mohamed of Warrenton, VA; Brother, Kevin Ricks of Edgefield, SC; his aunt, Mary Anne Bolton of Conway, NC and his uncle, William T. Flythe and his wife Janice of Houston, TX; and several Nieces and Nephews and his K-9 Companion, Baby.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, at 11am at First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC with Rev. Larry Matthews and Rev. Joe Castel officiating. 

Burial will follow in Milwaukee Cemetery in Milwaukee, NC. 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 from 7-8:30 at Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
