A fatal shooting on Carolina Rest Home Road this morning appears to be a matter of self-defense and after interviews with witnesses, processing the scene, and consulting with the district attorney’s office no charges have been filed.
Major Anzell Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement this evening it was determined that 59-year-old Clarence Tyrone Majette, the deceased, began firing shots at another man after a call was received around 11:45 a.m. of a domestic argument that escalated into shots being fired. Majette was fatally struck multiple times and Halifax County EMS pronounced him deceased at the scene.
Harris said this evening that Majette’s stepson had gone to visit his mother and child when the two men got into an argument that was ongoing throughout the morning. The matter escalated and Majette began firing shots and the stepson returned fire.
When deputies arrived they found the man identified as Majette lying on the ground with gunshot wounds and another man who had placed his weapon on the ground waiting for law enforcement to arrive.
Harris said after conducting multiple interviews and processing the crime scene, it was determined Majette began firing shots at the other individual. That individual then returned fire in self-defense, striking Majette multiple times.
Two pistols and numerous shell casings were recovered at the scene and are still being processed by the sheriff’s office’s criminal investigations division.
Harris said Lieutenant T. Clark, Sergeant D. Coley, corporals D. Williams and C. Roberts and Deputy C. Joseph “quickly responded and provided vital assistance to Detective A. Holland and Crime Scene Technician J. Horne in establishing facts and evidence in this case.”
