Roanoke Valley law enforcement reported the following:
Weldon Police Department
Chief Christopher Davis reported that on Sunday around 8:30 p.m. Lieutenant L. Melton and Officer A. Dickens were dispatched to Country Club Road and Stuart Circle on a hit and run call.
A good description was given of the truck and driver, who was later identified as John Elks of Enfield. Dickens contacted the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office to assist by checking an address where the driver and vehicle could possibly be.
A short time later that evening a deputy stopped Elks and contacted Dickens.
Dickens met the deputies and confirmed the damages on the truck matched the damages on the victim's vehicle.
Elks was charged with driving while license revoked, leaving the scene of an accident and damage to property.
He was jailed without the opportunity for bond due to a pending DWI charge.
He has a January 17 district court date for all charges.
Halifax County Sheriff’s Office
Major Anzell Harris reported that on Thursday Deputy K. Tillery responded to the Fifth Street Boat Landing on a call of breaking, entering, and larceny from a motor vehicle, in which a rifle, shotgun and a hunting bow were stolen.
On Friday the HCSO Criminal Investigations Division received information from the Roanoke Rapids Police Department Criminal Investigations Division that Kenneth Tyler “Chunk” Wood, 24, was most likely in possession of the weapons.
Later that evening while doing surveillance on Wood, detectives observed him showing another individual the weapons in the Five Points area, south of Roanoke Rapids. This observation led to the recovery of the rifle and shotgun.
Wood, who is a convicted felon and is currently on probation for possession of stolen goods and possession of stolen motor vehicle parts, was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a firearm by felon and two counts of possession of stolen firearms.
Detectives A. Holland, T. Byers, G. Keel, and J. Horne were instrumental in successfully resolving this case, Harris said, and were assisted by Lieutenant E. Richardson, sergeants R. Elder and G. Martin and Deputy D. Wilson.
“This case is a great example of agencies sharing information and working together to serve the citizens of Halifax County,” Sheriff Tyree Davis said.
Wood was sentenced to 24 months probation in January for multiple counts of larceny, which were consolidated for judgment, and occurred in the spring of 2022, and a 2023 count of possessing stolen goods.
He remains in the Halifax County Detention Center and awaits a January 3 district court date.
