The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Major Anzell Harris:
A vehicle reported stolen Wednesday was used in a Friday afternoon chase after Deputy D. Bybee spotted it in the area of West Tenth Street near Bolling Road around 3 p.m.
The vehicle, which had been entered into criminal databases, was driven by a man later identified as 32-year-old Maurice Grant, who is reported to be homeless.
Bybee conducted a traffic stop and Grant pulled into a local business. The deputy gave verbal commands to Grant but he left the scene and went into the city limits of Roanoke Rapids at speeds which reached 70 miles per hour.
Grant stopped at West Eleventh Street and abandoned the vehicle and three occupants inside who were later released.
Grant was arrested a short time later and taken into custody.

Bybee arrested and charged Grant with felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle, possess stolen motor vehicle and driving while license revoked.
He received a $15,000 bond and January 23 district court date.
The vehicle was returned to the victim.
Patrol Sergeant R. Elder, detectives C. Watkins and G. Keel and Patrol Lieutenant D. Newsome and officers of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department assisted.
Ecstasy arrest
A driver acting suspiciously and attempting to avoid Deputy J. Velez on Chestnut Street near Twelfth Street in Scotland Neck around 3 p.m. Friday resulted in the arrest of 32-year-old Freddrick Wishop.
The odor of marijuana was detected leading to a search of the vehicle.

Wishop was found in possession of ecstasy during a search.
Velez arrested and charged Wishop with possession of schedule I controlled substance and maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance.
Wishop received a January 23 district court date and a $1,500 bond.
