Roanoke Valley law enforcement reported the following:

Halifax County Sheriff’s Office

This morning around 1 Deputy J. Velez and Corporal K. Taylor were stationary on Interstate 95 observing traffic when they noticed a possible seatbelt violation, according to Major A.M. Harris.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Robert Jamell Wright, 44 of Roanoke Rapids, crossed the fog line twice and was stopped near mile marker 168.

An open container of alcohol was seen in the vehicle and Velez noticed the odor of alcohol from inside as well.

Wright removed his coat and placed it in the back seat over what was discovered to be a semiautomatic handgun.

Wright was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by felon, carrying a concealed gun, open container of alcohol violation and failure to maintain lane control.

Wright was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has a January 23 district court date. He also has a December 9 district court date for speeding, reckless driving to endanger and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Shooting

On Saturday deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of Lee Lane Road.

Harris said deputies learned a man identified as Larry Mickey Scott declined the services of a fiber internet company whose employees were going door to door.

After closing the door Harris came back outside and aimed his shotgun at one of the employees and fired.

A search warrant was executed at Scott's residence and the shotgun was seized. 

Sergeant R. Elder arrested and charged Scott with possession of a firearm by felon, assault by pointing a gun and assault with a deadly weapon.

Scott received a $12,500 bond with a December 11 district court date.

The employee was not injured.

Roanoke Rapids Police Department

On Wednesday around 9:30 p.m. Captain Harold Phillips reported that Officer J. Snider conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and East Thirteenth Street after witnessing a motor vehicle violation. 

Snider noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, which was driven by a man identified as Zavion Lamont Baker, 22, of Roanoke Rapids. 

While conducting a probable cause search of the vehicle, Snider located two plastic bags containing a total of 270 grams of marijuana under the driver’s seat. Digital scales and individual sandwich bags to weigh and package the marijuana were also discovered.

Baker’s license was revoked and he was on probation for felony flee to elude.

Snider arrested and charged Baker with felony possession of marijuana, felony possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for controlled substance, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while license revoked. Baker received a $15,000 secure bond and December 10 district court date.
