Halifax County commissioners today recognized two departments for recent awards they have received.

Finance department

For the 25th straight year, the Halifax County Finance Department received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

The award is for the fiscal year which ended June 20, 2023.

The report has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

County Manager Dia Denton presented the department with a banner congratulating its employees for the award.

“It’s our goal every year to get this award,” Finance Director Mary Duncan said. “We sit there, we analyze, and do everything we can to possibly qualify. It’s a team effort.”

Tax department

Meanwhile, Tax Assessor Shane Lynch was presented the 2024 Joseph E. Hunt Distinguished Award for Medium Jurisdictions at the North Carolina Association of Assessing Officers banquet and accepted it on the department’s behalf.

“This is not a Shane Lynch award or a tax assessor award,” he said. “This is a tax department award.”

The award recognizes the department for improving efficiency, building workflow, and improving communications.
