A Halifax County Detention Center officer was charged today with providing a phone to an inmate.

Adriana Perez Sanchez received a $15,000 bond and November 8 district court date.

She was not listed in detention records as of this report.

It was not immediately clear whether the inmate would face charges as well. Major Anzell M. Harris of the sheriff’s office said in a statement the case remains under investigation.

Sanchez had been employed with the detention center since March 1 until her resignation on October 15.

Harris said that during her employment the sheriff’s office received information that a cellular device was in the custody of an inmate. An investigation identified Sanchez as the employee who gave the phone to the inmate.

Sanchez quit her job shortly after the investigation.

During the investigation a search of the inmate’s holding area was conducted and officers located the cellphone.

Through the investigation the sheriff’s office determined the cellphone came from Sanchez while she was an employee. She was communicating with the inmate via the phone.

Detention center Administrator Matt Brown arrested Sanchez at her residence for the felony charge of providing a phone or electronic device to an inmate.

“At the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, we believe in holding both the community and ourselves accountable for our actions,” Sheriff Tyree Davis said. “This was great work done by Detention Administrator Matt Brown and the detention staff during this investigation.”

Davis said the case demonstrates “that no matter who you are, you are not above the law. A good officer hates a dirty officer more than the community does and today, with this case and these charges, the good guys won.”
