One of four escaped inmates from a county jail in South Carolina was apprehended Thursday morning using an assumed name.

When arrested last week by Roanoke Rapids police officer I. Nielsen, Anton Conway-Bennett had given him the name Garmal Brown of Santee, South Carolina, Chief Shane Guyant said.

Nielsen had responded to the area of Clinton Street on a suspicious vehicle call.

The man who identified himself as Brown was with the vehicle, which was apparently broken down.

When the officer received information that the vehicle was stolen from South Carolina, he was going to detain Conway-Bennett, who initially fled on foot but was captured shortly thereafter.

At the time of his arrest, Conway-Bennett Bennett had no identification. He was initially charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting an officer.

He received a $5,000 bond but was held until he could produce identifying information.

When following up on the stolen vehicle today with South Carolina law enforcement, Brown’s identity was confirmed as Conway-Bennett, 30, one of four wanted by the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office for escaping from the detention center through an air conditioning vent and kicking a steel maintenance door until they got through. The escape occurred the morning of October 14.

Bennett was serving time for stealing a vehicle, WBTV reported.

Guyant said was most likely heading to Chesterfield County, Virginia, where he has family and is wanted for several theft cases there.

It is highly unlikely that any of the other escapees were in the Roanoke Valley, Guyant said.

One other escapee has since been caught in Richland County, South Carolina, WBTV reported.

In light of the new information, Bennett was also charged with identity theft.

He remains in the Halifax County Detention Center without the opportunity for bond and is awaiting extradition to South Carolina and Virginia.
