A Roanoke Rapids woman was charged with stabbing her mother in the face Tuesday evening.

The mother was treated and released, Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant said.

Officers responding to the call around 7:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Hamilton Street learned that Angela Dorene Mitchum, 42, of Roanoke Rapids, stabbed her mother with a kitchen knife after breaking into her residence.

She had been told several times to not come to the house.

Guyant said Mitchum has mental issues that have caused problems amongst the family for years.

When officers arrived, Mitchum was being restrained by a man but was still holding what the police chief described as a bloody knife.

Officers ordered Mitchum to drop the knife several times and she refused. She became violent and resisted the officers. Mitchum was forcefully restrained and taken into custody.

Sergeant C. Hagbourne arrested and charged Mitchum with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony breaking and entering to terrorize, and resisting a public officer.  She was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has a Thursday district court date.
