An Enfield woman was charged today with intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and a neglect of a child inflicting seriously bodily.
The woman, Christa Lewis Dupree, 40, was also charged with non-support of a child, a case not related to the child abuse case.
Major Anzell M. Harris of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said the criminal investigations division was notified on May 23 of a social services case that involved multiple counties due to a custody issue.
During the initial investigation WakeMed had a juvenile in the emergency department who had what appeared to be thermal burns on her feet, and scarring on her arms and back. Investigation also determined that Dupree was not financially supporting another child — a 14-year-old son living in Roanoke Rapids.
Detective Sergeant C.H. Watkins said the burn injuries were consistent with something hot applied to the child’s feet. He said investigators believe the injuries to the back and arms were consistent with the child being struck.
It was not clear how this might have gone on but Watkins said it had been long enough for the wounds to scar.
The injured juvenile was interviewed and warrants were obtained.
Dupree was taken into custody at her residence and served warrants for failure to appear in Halifax County. She was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has a Thursday district court date.
She is also scheduled to appear in district court on September 19 for charges related to driving while license revoked due to impaired driving, fail to stop for a stop sign or red flashing light, a suspended or revoked tag and no liability insurance.
