Umel Jackson, a Weldon man federally indicted in a May standoff, will have his first appearance in Raleigh Thursday before Magistrate Judge Brian S, Myers.

On Tuesday United States Magistrate Judge Robert B. Jones Jr. signed a writ of habeas corpus for Jackson’s initial appearance at 10 a.m.

Jackson earlier this month was indicted federally on a charge of illegally receiving a firearm while under indictment.

The indictment is based on a criminal complaint filed by an agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives which charges him with the federal crime of illegal receipt of a firearm by a person under indictment.
