A Roanoke Rapids man with two previous DWI convictions was charged Thursday evening in a hit and run crash at Roanoke Avenue and Jackson Street Extension.
Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant said around 6:30 Sergeant J. Spragins responded to a hit and run collision that left a vehicle with extensive damage. Guyant and Spragins identified the driver as 45-year-old Jermaine Samuel Bowser.
Master Officer K. Williams noticed a vehicle matching the description given as it was being driven north on Smith Church Road. Williams conducted a traffic stop on West Tenth Street near Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.
Williams confirmed the vehicle was the one involved in the hit and run and also confirmed Bowser was the driver.
Bowser was arrested and Officer M. Morris detected the odor of alcohol.
At the police department Williams conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and requested a breath sample. Bowser registered .09.
He was charged with hit and run leaving the scene of an accident, driving while license revoked, DWI, and failing to stop for stop sign/red light.
He was jailed without the opportunity for bond as he was already on pretrial release for a domestic violence protective order violation. He has a September 6 district court date.
Guyant said Bowser has two previous DWI convictions in February 2013 and in November 2015 in Halifax County.
