The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Captain Scott Hall:

Domestic assault

A Halifax man was arrested and charged this morning in a knife assault which injured two women.

Hinton Lee Alston, 64, a retired Halifax County detention officer, was charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor domestic violence.

Alston was acquainted with the women.

He was jailed without the opportunity due to the domestic nature of the charge. The nature of the relationship between Alston and one of the victims was not marital, Hall confirmed.

Deputies responded to the 17000 block of Highway 561 around 3:45 and found one female victim with a laceration to the hand and a second female holding Alston down.

The second woman also sustained a laceration.

Both victims were transported to ECU North Hospital where they have been treated and released.

“(This morning) our deputies responded to an assault call at retired detention employee Hinton Alston’s residence,” Sheriff Tyree Davis said. “After arriving on scene deputies took control of the situation, provided aid, secured the scene for EMS to proceed and took Mr. Alston into custody for the assault.”

Davis said, “It’s unfortunate anytime we respond to an assault call, especially when it’s someone we’ve worked beside to ensure the safety of Halifax County.”

However, the sheriff said, “At the end of the day we will do our jobs. In doing so we will be fair, firm and consistent while maintaining professionalism. It doesn’t matter who you are or how we feel about you. The safety of our community and integrity of our profession comes first.”

Alston has a June 27 district court date.
