A 22-year-old Roanoke Rapids man remains in the Halifax County Detention Center after he was charged with six counts of breaking and entering motor vehicles and stealing and uttering forged checks.
Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant said the amount written on the forged checks was more than $100 and more charges could be filed against Anthony Vasaturo after leads in the investigation were developed due to fraudulent financial transactions.
Investigation began in late June when the police department received six reports of six vehicles that were broken into within a two block radius of each other in the East Circle Drive area.
The vehicles were reportedly locked during the commission of the crime. In all of these crimes, the suspect broke windows to gain entry into the vehicle.
Throughout this investigation, Detectives B. Biggerstaff and N. Bankert performed dozens of court orders and were able to use information received from these orders to develop what Guyant described as extremely strong leads that led to the arrest of Vasaturo.
The execution of a search warrant led the detectives to find several financial documents that will possibly lead to further charges.
Monday Vasaturo was charged with six counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle with the intent to commit theft, six counts of injury to personal property, larceny of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, larceny of a chose in action — the checks — forgery of an instrument, uttering a forged instrument and uttering a forged endorsement.
He received a $19,000 secured bond and a September 26 district court date.
