Heading into Friday’s certification of last week’s primary election results only fractional differences emerged in the tight state House District 27 race between the unofficial winner — Rodney Pierce — and incumbent Michael Wray.

On Tuesday boards of election in Halifax, Northampton, and Warren counties met to review any absentee ballots that arrived before 7:30 p.m. on election day but after their respective meetings. In addition, they reviewed and approved provisional ballots.

After those actions Tuesday, little changed in the contested house race — Pierce picking up two additional votes and Wray three.

The outcome of the Tuesday meetings changed Pierce’s percentage lead to .34 percent — down by .02 percent from results shown after all precincts had reported Tuesday evening.

Wray said in a statement last week he was going to wait until the election results are certified given the close margin of the race before deciding what his next steps will be.

In Halifax County Board of Elections Supervisor Kristin Scott said two absentee ballots by mail came into the elections office by 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Halifax board also approved six provisional ballots, disapproved six provisional ballots, accepted three partial provisional ballots, and have five pending provisional ballots that will be considered at 10 a.m. Friday before the certification begins at 11 a.m.

Scott said the five voters who cast provisional ballots that are pending did not have IDs. They have until Thursday to bring their IDs to the board of elections office on King Street in Halifax in the Historic Courthouse.

As far as the state House 27 race, Scott said other than some municipal races, this race “was one of the closest I’ve ever seen.”
