The Halifax County Sheriff's Office reported the following, according to Chief Deputy Scott Hall:

On Friday Corporal S.E. Stansberry responded to the area of Hobgood on an assault call. Investigation led to charges being filed on William Walter Leggett Jr., 44, for cruelty to animals and simple assault.

Leggett was arrested Monday and posted $2,500 bond.

Hall said today the assault charge was the result of a dispute between Leggett and the victim.

The cruelty to animals charge reflects Leggett allegedly killed a dog. Hall could not immediately confirm whether the dog belonged to the assault victim or how the dog was killed.

Leggett has an October 17 court date.
